Amylase

A digestive enzyme made primarily by the pancreas and salivary glands. An enzyme that aids in the digestion of starch.

Alpha amylase
Classification of enzyme to catalyze the hydrolysis of starch (amylose and amylopectin) to a significant extent resulting in the release of maltose. The enzyme is found in nearly all plants, animals and microorganisms.

Beta amylase
Classification of enzyme that releases successive maltose units from the nonreducing end of a polysaccharide chain by hydrolysis of a-1,4-glucan linkages.

Blood amylase Test
This is a test that helps diagnose and monitor acute or chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and other disorders that may involve the pancreas.

Enzyme
A substance made and used by the body to trigger specific chemical reactions.

Gluco amylase
Classification of an enzyme that breaks the bonds near the ends of large carbohydrates (starches), releasing maltose and free glucose.

Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas.

Pytalin
an amylase secreted in saliva

Salivary
Glands in the mouth that produce saliva.

Urine Test
This is a test that measures the amount of amylase in urine. Amylase is an enzyme that helps digest fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. It is produced mainly in the pancreas and the glands that make saliva.
